What is CanadaHelps and What Do They Do?
CanadaHelps is a Canadian registered charity and non-profit organization that acts on behalf of more than 85,000 registered charities to manage electronic donations. More than 1,300 catholic parishes use CanadaHelps, including the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall, to process online donations. St Raphael's and St, Mary's are now registered with CanadaHelps to take advantage of this great service.
CanadaHelps is self-funded by charging a processing fee for each charitable donation. Similar to a bank or credit card, a fee of 3.5% for recurring monthly donations or 4% for one-time donations is charged per transaction. The fee is deducted from the donation and the remainder is sent to the parish. Donors may opt to top up their donation to cover the transaction fee, so 100% of their donation is sent to the parish.
Sample fees:
A $20 one-time donation is subject to a 4% fee. $20 - 4% ($0.80) = $19.20
A $100 recuring monthly donation is subject to a 3.5% fee. $100 - 3.5% ($3.50) = $96.50
Don't forget that when you use a rewards credit card, you will earn points with every donation made to the parish.
CanadaHelps also provides administrative support to the donors and the charity:
- Donors automatically receive their tax receipt directly from CanadaHelps.
- The parish will receive detailed financial statements itemizing all the donations and their dedications
- Donations are transferred by electronic deposit directly into the parish bank account on a weekly basis
- Most importantly, the administrative effort by parish volunteers to manage and collect envelopes and loose collections, count the donations, and transport cash to the bank, can be eliminated.
